Fragility of Hydraulic Elevators for Use in Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering
نویسنده
چکیده
New performance-based earthquake engineering methods developed by the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center, the Applied Technology Council, and others include damage analysis at a highly detailed level, requiring the compilation of fragility functions for a large number of damageable generic structural and nonstructural components. This brief paper presents the development of a fragility function for hydraulic elevators. It uses post-earthquake survey data from 91 elevators in nine California locations after two earthquakes. Surveys were used to collect data on facilities and elevators. Ground-motion records from the California Integrated Seismic Network were used to estimate engineering demands at each site. Binary regression analysis was used to fit a fragility function, which takes the form of a lognormal cumulative distribution function with median value of PGA =0.42 g and logarithmic standard deviation of 0.3. The fragility function appears to be reasonable based on four criteria. DOI: 10.1193/1.2720902

Seismic fragility assessment of RC moment resisting frame buildings designed for different editions of Iranian seismic design code
Background and objective: Developing fragility and vulnerability functions are important tools in seismic reliability assessment of buildings and are widely used in regional seismic risk studies. To date sufficient studies for developing analytical fragility functions for Iranian code-conforming buildings have not been carried out. Performing such studies are necessary to assess the adequacy of...
متن کاملAssessment of an RC existing hospital building with special moment frame using fragility curve
In this study, an existing hospital structure has been evaluated with incremental dynamic analysis (IDA). This building is accommodated in Karaj with soil type II. At first, two 2-D frames along X, Y direction are selected. Then, five performance levels are determined according to “Rehabilitation Code for Existing Buildings (Publication No. 360) including Immediate Operational (IO), Limited Dam...
متن کاملEvaluating Seismic Effects on a Water Supply Network and Quantifying Post-Earthquake Recovery
This paper summarises the impact of major earthquakes, 2010–2011, on Christchurch’s water supply network and what recovery measures have been applied, what worked well, what did not and why. A number of issues related to the open nature of the Christchurch water supply network were identified during earthquakes. It was difficult to manage large water supply pressure zones during the post-earthq...
متن کاملAn Engineering Application of Earthquake Early Warning: ePAD-Based Decision Framework for Elevator Control
In a medium-to-large earthquake, there are often reports of people being trapped or injured in elevators. This study investigates using an earthquake early warning (EEW) system, which provides seconds to tens of seconds warning before seismic waves arrive at a site, to help people escape from the elevators before a strong shaking arrives. However, such an application remains as a major engineer...
متن کاملAssessment of Near-Fault Ground Motion Effects on the Fragility Curves of Tall Steel Moment Resisting Frames
Nowadays it is common to use the fragility curves in probabilistic methods to determine the collapse probability resulting from an earthquake. The uncertainties exist in intensity and frequency content of the earthquake records are considered as the most effective parameters in developing the fragility curves. The pulse-type records reported in the near-fault regions might lead to the major dam...
